THE FOCUS BACK WHERE IT BELONGS
President's Message
By Jim Pace, H.E.A President

As you all know by now, Helen Rogers and Bruce Minton have been elected to the Hesperia School Board. Recently, during the election a voter asked me how Helen and Bruce would be different from the current board. I responded by saying, "They will put the focus back on the school sites, where it belongs." I reminded the person that last year the current board voted to cut 46 teaching positions, increase class size and cut other vital educational programs such as Reading Recovery. In addition, the majority of the classified cuts were at the school sites. This approach was wrong. Our priority needs to be our school sites and this is where Helen and Bruce will place their priorities.

Secondly, I would like to thank everybody that helped during the campaign. Beating two incumbents was no easy task. It took many members of the community pulling together to get the job done. Who will benefit most by having Rogers and Minton on the board? First and foremost the students, the community and the employees.

Lastly, we would like to invite all of you to attend the next board meeting on December 8th at 6:00 p.m. to witness Rogers and Minton being sworn into office. This wil take place at the Sultana Multipurpose Room.

Hope to see you all there!

Together we make a difference,

SCSEBA REPORT
Blair Thompson
Labor Representative

In the Hesperia Unified School District, HEA and CSEA representatives serve as voting member on the SCSEBA, Southern California Schools Employee Benefits Association, Board of Directors in alternating years. This year, HEA provides the labor representative from Hesperia on the Board of Directors.

Although we changed our major medical coverage this year from a Blue Cross plan offered through SCSEBA to a Blue Shield plan offered through the High Desert & Inland Employee-Employer Trust, we still maintain part of our benefits package through SCSEBA. In October, I attended the annual planning meeting of the SCSEBA Board of Directors. This year, each Insurance Plan offered by SCSEBA made a presentation of their program to the members of the Board. In the next several newsletters, I will try to provide some important facts about each of these plans.

We have had Pacific Care Behavioral Health as part of our benefit package for several years. Some of our members have made use of the Pacific Care plan, but there are others who might benefit if they knew what the plan offered.

Pacific Care offers a program called EAP (Employee Assistance Program). This is a program designed to assist employees of Hesperia Unified in resolving personal concerns that may affect their job performance.

EAP is a service provided by Pacific Care to assist a member who has a problem or need in their personal or work life. It is not based on medical necessity, is strictly confidential and free of charge, and covers employees and all members of the household.

It offers counseling services that include: Marriage and Child Counseling; Depression, Eating Disorders; Gambling; Sexual and Drug/Alcohol Issues; Job/Personal Stress; Supervisor/Co-worker conflicts and more

They also offer Materials for all of Life's situations. They also have Child Care Resources and Elder Care Resources.

In addition they offer free legal consultations covering a full array of topics including wills, trusts, divorce, small claims, personal injury, real estate transactions, crimianl or civil issues and many more. They also offer referral to legal representation at reduced rates.

To contact Pacific Care on the web go to www.pbhi.com or you can go to our website www.hesperiateachers.com and go to the "Insurance" tab at the top of the page and then select Pacific Care. Once you are on their web page, enter the User name: SCSEBA and Password: help. Then follow the prompts.

LOTS OF HARD WORK PAID OFF
Claudia Ethun
Secretary

Our membership came through and dedicated many hours of hard work to make the school board election a successful one. Whether it was phone calling, sign making, sign installing, flier distribution, snack making, or rallying on Main Street, it all made a difference. Our hard work paid off to successfully make the public aware of our two very qualified candidates. On November 4th, the Hesperia voters selected our candiates: Helen Rogers and Bruce Minton for the Hesperia School Board. The HEA Executive Board wants to thank every member who contributed time toward this campaign.

IT WAS ALL WORTHWHILE!!
